Please note the SLO County Dept. of Public Works will be continuing the seismic retrofit project on the Avila Beach Drive bridge over San Luis Obispo Creek. The bridge provides the only public access road to Port San Luis and Diablo Canyon Power Plant.
A 2020 PG&E study on evacuation routes identified this bridge as a concern of potential collapse during an earthquake. The seismic retrofit will assure the evacuation route and upgrade the bridge to current codes.
The seismic retrofit elements include:
* The north abutment will be strengthened by installing restrainers into the soil behind the abutment.
*The
south abutment will be strengthened by reinforcing the existing
abutment and connecting a concrete approach slab to the abutment.
*The existing asphalt concrete (AC) deck overlay will be removed and replaced with a new polyester concrete deck overlay.
Souza Construction has been awarded the contract to perform the work. On Tuesday and Wednesday, September 11 & 12, from 3:30 pm - 7:00 pm, Souza Construction is planning on closing a single lane of traffic on top of the bridge so they can pump concrete down to Pier 3 for the pier wall jacket. This timing coincides with low tide. Additionally, the schedule has been cleared with PG&E and the Harbor District to lessen the impact of employee traffic.
Souza Construction has not yet indicated when they will go full speed on the top of the roadway. It partially depends on how smoothly the work on Pier 3 goes. Also, they want to complete as much of the work under the bridge as they can this month before getting started on top of the bridge.
